History of the property – brief overview
Built in the 1890s by architect Pietro Delugan as a private residence, the villa soon became “Pension Westend,” attracting distinguished guests in the spa town of Merano, including Empress Sissi (Elisabeth of Austria) and European nobility.
Owned by the Pöder family since 1907, the villa survived two world wars while preserving its character. In 1983, the Strohmer family—also owners of Hotel Europa Splendid—carefully restored the property, maintaining its historic charm while adding modern comfort.
Original furnishings from J. & J. Herrmann are part of its heritage, with pieces displayed at Vienna's MAK museum. Since 1984, the building has been protected as a cultural monument.
The German poet Gottfried Benn also stayed here, writing celebrated poems about Merano and letters to his friends from the Villa Westend.
Today, Hotel Villa Westend combines history, culture, and authentic Merano lifestyle.
